Opening Ceremony to Celebrate the Japan Year in Spain 2013

In 1613 Date Masamune, a warlord of the Sengoku period, decided to send a delegation to Europe (Spain and Rome). Its primary objective was to establish commercial relations with Nueva España and to ask for the dispatch of missionaries to Japan. The mission, which had left Sendai in October 1613, arrived in Spain in October 1614.

In order to commemorate the 400th anniversary of this historic event, a great number of cultural events are to be held in Spain from 2013 to 2014. On June 11th, 2013, a special recital will be held at the Teatro Real of Madrid as an opening ceremony to celebrate the Japan Year in Spain under the artistic direction of the pianist Mine Kawakami. Shoji Kojima will participate as a guest artist along with the flamenco singer Miguel Poveda.
